During One Ocean Week we will focus on Bergen as a historic trade and maritime city in the Middle Ages. Sea transport has uniquely connected the city with large parts of Europe. The exhibition contains clear evidence of this contact. We have wares from Syria, Italy, England, Germany and many other countries.

Medieval Bergen was an international city, arguably as much a European city as a Norwegian one.  In addition to foreign wares, the city was also home to many foreign people, who naturally also affected how the city developed. We think that as much as one third of the city’s adult population was born in another country. These encounters with people from across Europe have also affected how we speak. On one of the rune sticks on display it says:  Rome, capital of the world; I was there yesterday
