Stockfish has been an important commodity in Norway for at least a thousand years. Drying as a method of conserving food is even older. In the Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene we have evidence of Hanseatic trade with stockfish on Bryggen over a period of around 500 years.

During One Ocean Week, Schøtstuene, in collaboration with Bergen Maritime Museum, offers engaging and educational activities connected to the theme ocean and climate:

  • Beat a stockfish
  • Be a cooper (build a barrel)
  • Build a home-made wood boat with a rubber band propeller
  • Look into an aquascope
  • Do you have the balance of a young docker? Try stilts
  • Standing long jumps - measure the length of your jump in ells, then convert to cm.
  • Write your name in gothic handwriting with a slate pencil and tablet.
  • Learn and practice the reef knot
